For my final lesson, I will be integrating technology into a heart rate fitness development plan. For five days, my students will be monitoring their maximum, minimum, and average heart rates through the use of a tracking device. Heart rate monitors are expensive, but having a class set and assigning each student to a monitor for the week would be more realistic. My district for the final project has many resources we can utilize, so each students gets to borrow and track their daily heart rate levels using their own app on the iPad. Students will make daily entries on
the class using Google Drive to log max, min, average heart rate, and total
time in zone over the course of 5 days on a class shared powerpoint. Each student
will write about what activities they participated in for each day and at the
end of the lesson, they will reflect on how their time in zone is related to their
overall heart rate stats and activities in which they participated in a presentation of their choice (PowerPoint, Prezi, a personal video, or Screencastify).
The fact is that student's today LOVE using technology. By integrating both the device and the final project using multi-media, students are much more likely to show enthusiasm towards physical education and fitness. I think in the future, students will be required to have their own means of tracking personal fitness data, such as a FitBit or a heart rate monitor or any other sort of tracking device. They are becoming more and more common, and I think that as physical fitness rises, so will the prevalence of these devices. It is a great, relative way to teach students about health and fitness for life!
I love your idea Hannah, I think teaching students about their heart rates and how they can change based on your activity. I also love that learning this information can have positive impacts on their health and activity.
ReplyDeleteThank you! The younger we start feeding this information about health and exercise to children, the less likely we are to be dealing with health problems when they get older, like diabetes and obesity. Start em young, keep em young! :)
DeleteI am always interested to see your technology ideas for physical education. Tracking their heart ate is a great way to use your technology. People these days are all about the FitBit and tracking their steps and tracking their health in general. This is a great way to show students that the technology they constantly use can be used to track their health.
ReplyDeleteI thought so, too! I think that in the future, fitbits are going to be required for some physical education programs and especially PE at the college level. They are so easy to use and give so much information!
DeleteI think that this is a great lesson and great way to incorporate technology but I'm gonna try to push it further. Because fitness is on the rise and these means of recording personal progress are becoming more common how could you incorporate technology in a new way that goes beyond the norm. What I mean is when eventually everyone has their own fitbit how would your class go beyond just monitoring and recording because they would already be doing that.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how much you are into gaming but there is a significant expansion in virtual reality gaming and would be a way in which students could interact with students beyond their classroom or communities. Just something to consider.
I love that idea, Sam! Especially with technology that is interactive, students will LOVE to participate! The only thing that might be in question is the cost of equipment necessary. But there are always grants to write and other ways to accumulate a fund for that type of new technology! Thanks for the idea!
